Early Life and Education
Guo Moruo, originally named Guo Kaizhen, was born in Shawan, a small town in Leshan city, Sichuan province, China. Raised in a Hakka family that had migrated from Fujian province in the 17th century, Guo was the eighth child in his family. His early education was influenced by traditional Chinese literature and ancient cultural traditions, imparted by his private tutor, Shen Huanzhang. As a teenager, Guo was also introduced to modern books and magazines by his eldest brother, Guo Kaiwen, which sparked his lifelong interest in literature and the arts.
In 1914, Guo traveled to Japan to study medicine, where he started learning foreign languages and literature. During his time in Japan, Guo published his first anthology of poems, The Goddesses, in 1921, which laid the foundation for new-style poetry in China and achieved immediate success. This work established Guo as a leading figure in modern Chinese literature, promoting the romantic spirit and modern vernacular literature through his co-founding of the Creation Society in Shanghai.
Literary and Scholarly Contributions
Guo Moruo's literary works include poems, plays, and essays that reflect his passionate engagement with social and political issues. He is best known for his historical plays, especially Cai Wenji, which celebrates the life and struggles of the eponymous Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) poet. His works often convey themes of patriotism and social justice, resonating with the broader intellectual and cultural movements in early 20th-century China.
Fluent in Japanese, German, and English, Guo Moruo was a prolific translator, bringing to Chinese audiences the works of German philosophers Friedrich Schiller and Friedrich Nietzsche, Russian authors like Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Turgenev, and British writers such as Percy Shelley and H.G. Wells. His translations were instrumental in enriching Chinese literary and philosophical discourses, as they introduced new ideas and stylistic approaches.
Archaeological and Artistic Impact
Apart from his literary achievements, Guo Moruo made significant contributions to Chinese archaeology and art. His research on ancient Chinese inscriptions and historical texts earned him a reputation as a distinguished scholar. He held prestigious positions, such as the first president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Legacy and Commemoration
Guo Moruo's influence extends beyond literature and scholarship; he played a crucial role in cultural and educational initiatives in China.
